Strategic objectives
With the rapid development of space technology based on RS, GIS and GPS in recent decades, we have new and effective ways for collecting data on natural disasters such as oceanic and coastal disasters (hurricanes, tropical cyclones, storm surges, tsunamis, sea waves, sea ice, sea level risings, et. at.), meteorological disasters (flooding, tropical storm), and geological disasters (earthquake, volcanic eruptions and landslides). Modern information systems, supported by powerful super computers and telecommunications facilities, have enabled techniques that have permitted significant improvements in disaster prevention, reduction and prediction.
The advent of Grid technology allows scientists to integrate and analyze spatial and temporal disaster data at global scale, to model and simulate disasters more precisely, and to obtain real-time decision making and emergency response capability.
We seek to improve the disaster-prevention and disaster-reduction ability with the most advanced Grid technology together with RS, GIS, GPS, and wired/wireless sensor network technologies, to build a integrated scientific demonstration system on prediction of and responding to oceanic and coastal disasters or meteorological disasters.
The major research work includes:
-
Grid enabled integrated and distributed databases for storage of heterogeneous spatial and temporal data of major disasters, including basic data (geographic, meteorological, socio-economic, health-related,…); historical and real-time data; remote sensing multi-source data (imagery, altimetry, …)
-
Risk assessment on regional disasters and regional planning including vulnerability factors analysis, statistics on historical disasters data (probability, temporal-spatial distribution, averages, and limitation) and risk evaluation
-
Grid enabled information processing platform for major disasters which supports simulation and modeling of major disasters, damage evaluation by simulation, pre-warning of disaster according to simulation results, and fusion and extraction of relevant information.
-
Decision support platform for major disasters which provides multi-source data access, data integration and fusion for decision support, real-time evaluation of disasters, disasters response planning, and post-disasters evaluation and reconstruction planning.
